Home LIFE HELPS I'm going to heaven

I'm a good person

I'm a really good person. I will go to heaven.I hope I will go to heaven

"I'm a good person, of course God will let me into heaven when I die; well I think so". Many people say this kind of thing and then give many reasons as to why God will let them into His heaven:-

  • I haven't murdered anyone.  I'm a good person.  I'm better than him or her.
  • I've been to a church service.
  • I don't swear, well not very much.Caring for dad
  • I can recite the "Lord's prayer".
  • Everyone says I am a good person.
  • I cared for my elderly parents.
  • I don't drink too much.
  • I give lots of money to needy causes.

In the Bible, Jesus taught that NONE of the above good acts would be sufficient to get anyone into heaven!  This is most alarming.  Let's examine what Jesus actually said more closely.  Jesus was sitting at the top of the hill, teaching a great crowd of Jewish people.  He said,

= the quality of being
right / just / without sin
before God

... unless your righteousness
exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees,
you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:20

TWorried womanhis Worried manmust have really alarmed many in the crowd.  The scribes and Pharisees were the religious leaders at that time.  People must have thought, "well if our religious leaders are not good enough to get into heaven, then I'm doomed.  I can't do better than them".

The scribes were professional men who copied the Bible by hand.  They were also teachers of the Bible.

The Pharisees were the strictest sect of the Jews.  They tried very hard to keep all of God's laws.  If anyone could say they tried hard to be a good person, worthy of heaven, it should be a Pharisee.  They divided God's law, the Ten Commandments, into hundreds of small regulations.  Each regulation specified some part of what was to be done in daily life: washing hands, how far one could walk on the Sabbath day, etc, etc, etc.  They then tried to live each day, keeping every one of these rules.  This was a great effort at trying to be good, much better than anything that you or I could achieve.  But Jesus says

... unless your righteousness
exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees,
you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:20

Not so sure of heaven nowWhat went wrong?

Why is this great effort a failure?  Imagine living your whole life thinking you are good enough it to heaven, then finding out on Judgement Day -- when it is all too late, you have failed!

The big problem with what the scribes and Pharisees were attempting is that they were trying to make themselves righteous before God.  This is impossible because all of us are born sinners and cannot please God no matter how hard we try.  Our friends on earth may say, "yes, George or Jane or whoever is a good person". He or she probably really is what we would call a good person.  But from God's point of view (and this is the only view that counts) the person is a sinner and cannot stand before God.  To understand how easy it is to offend God, look at the page what's a sin?.

The scribes and Pharisees were trying to live life on earth without any personal connection to God.  They had no living faith in God.  Their theory was that on Judgement Day, they would have enough of their own good works for God to give them a place in heaven.  The scribes and Pharisees had failed to understand that no one can keep God's Laws to the perfect standard He requires.bestness

... I am the LORD your God.
... you shall be holy; for I am holy. ...
Leviticus 11:44

... we are all like an unclean thing,
and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; ...
Isaiah 64:6

Many people today are trying to do just what the scribes and Pharisees were doing.  That is, trying to live now on earth without God, then hoping that they can get into heaven later.  It just will not work!  There is no way we can fix the problems of our sins.

What's a sin? ...

But there is GOOD NEWS

There is a method that is sure to get people into heaven.  It's God's method of saving people.  Instead of depending on our own goodness, what we have done; we can put our trust in God's goodness.  This puts the surety of going to heaven on God, on what He has done; not on what we have done.  What has God done for us?  He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ into the world, to live a perfect human life then die on a cross to pay the penalty for our sins.  Jesus rose from the dead and now offers new life, (eternal life) to all who will receive Him as their Lord and God.

You can be perfect before Almighty God

If you ask Jesus to forgive your sins and to be the Lord (or Ruler or Boss) of your life,  He will come into your heart today.  Your sins will be forgiven immediately because Jesus has already made a complete payment for sin when He died on the cross.  God the Father was totally satisfied with this one payment for sin.  There is no other way to be acceptable to God.  If you have received Jesus Christ and fully trust Him (ie become a Christian), then you are perfect in God's sight: holy and blameless ... now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
.                             Ephesians 2:13

... you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight--
.                             Colossians 1:21,22

... you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
.                             Ephesians 2:19x
.  In addition, you have a new life with Jesus every day as your Friend and Guide.  Judgement Day will no longer be a worry as you have passed from death into life.

Most assuredly, I say to you,
he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life,
and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
John 5:24

Can I be absolutely sure of going to heaven?

The answer is YES! Christians are absolutely sure that they will go to heaven when they hear God's Holy Spirit speaking in their hearts, assuring them that they are a child of God.  But the Holy Spirit will only speak this way when a person has received Jesus as their Lord and Saviour and they are trying to live God's way every day.

To continue a new life with Jesus Christ, one needs to join a good local church like Monash Christian Fellowship to collectively worship God, as the Bible specifies.  He or she also need the love and support from a good local church to learn to do all that God requires.
