Home LIFE HELPS Choose a Good Church

How to choose a good local church.

choosechurchwrongfindThis page is to offer help to interstate and overseas web visitors to find a good local church.  Obviously  you are too far away to join Monash Christian Fellowship or one of the good churches on the links page.  How should you go about the task?

Firstly, according to the Bible, a local church of Jesus Christ must do three main  things (this was covered in Frequently Asked Questions):-

It is God’s will for you to be part of such an alive local church:-

  • to have the assurance that you have eternal life in heaven,
  • to grow in the knowledge of Jesus,
  • to grow in relationship with Him,
  • to grow in personal holiness
  • and to grow in reaching out to others with the gospel.

Your soul, your responsibility

Your responsibilityNow comes the difficult bit.  No local church on earth is perfect, they all make mistakes!  Plus local churches differ in purity, that is, some follow God’s instructions from the Bible much better than others.  The Bible warns us that some churches are false churches, that is, they are not God’s people at all - they are on their way to burn in hell!

Choosing a local church should therefore be a careful and prayerful decision, not blind chance.  Do your own research, ask questions and check things in the Bible for yourself.  Above all, ask Jesus to help you find the local church He wants you to join and support.

The Word of God

The Church - upholding God's Truth The Bible tells us that The Church is the pillar and support of the truth.  A local church must proclaim God’s Truth.  All the Bible must be preached to whoever will listen.  This means that a local church must affirm that the Bible is the Word of God and whatever the Bible says must be obeyed by all.

… This is the church of the living God, which is the pillar and support of the truth.
1 Timothy 3:15     New Living Translation

You should also be aware that good preaching usually causes a person to feel uncomfortable.  This is because the person realises that there are things in their life that do not please God.  The true followers of Jesus respond to this by personally asking Jesus to forgive them and to help them make adjustments to their lives.  Over time, this produces holy living in the believers.

The local church people

If the local church is truly honouring God’s Word, then:-

  • The people will be friendly and will readily receive you, love you and support you through your difficulties.
  • The leaders will know the Word of God and be Godly people.
  • You will be greatly encouraged with the collective worship of God.
  • You will also be encouraged to learn more from the Bible yourself.  Your questions will be welcomed.
  • You will also be encouraged to seek out and use the spiritual gifts God has blessed you with.

Finally - continue

Continue to be spiritually alert after you have chosen a local church.  Ask questions.  Continue to check the Bible for yourself.  Your soul is your responsibility!
