Home LIFE HELPS What's a sin?

What's a SIN?     Does it affect me?

The Bible often speaks about sin.  A sin is an offence to God, something that arouses His holy anger.  A sin is a wrong action, speech or thought.

Moses with God's ten commandments1,400 years before Jesus Christ, God gave Moses The Ten 10 commandments.  This is God's law as to how we all should live, both then and today.  This law is very important and is written twice in full in the Bible.  Check it out for yourself :-  Exodus 20:2-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21

No other gods before Me.

= God is first priority.

Make no idols or images.

= Worship God in the spirit with no image.

Do not take the Lord’s name in vain.

= Honour the Lord’s name.

Remember the Sabbath day.

= Keep the Lord’s day (Sunday) for the Lord. more ...

Honour your parents.

= Obey all authorities.

Do not murder.

= Protect and value human life.

Do not commit adultery.

= Keep sex for marriage.

Do not steal.

= Be honest.

Do not commit false witness.

= Tell the truth.

Do not covert.

= Do not be jealous of other people’s things.

On first reading this list, you may think there are some items that you have not offended God with.  This is a serious mistake!  Consider these examples:-

Motorist exceeding speed limitA motorist travels at 1kph over the speed limit.  That's no big deal to the police, but the motorist has broken at least two of God's commands!  Firstly, the command to honour parents has been broken.  Why?  Because honouring our parents is top of the list of the many authorities that God commands us to obey.  Besides our parents, we must obey our teachers, our employers, government officials and laws of the land.  Secondly, God's command to not murder has also been broken.  Why?  Because the speed law set by the government is a subset of God's law, do not murder.  The speed restriction law exists to protect human life.  All proper government laws are based on God's ten commandments.

Did you know?
God's commands also support healing for our bodies. Click this link for more information.

Thinking of murderJesus explained that to be guilty of murder before God, all that is necessary is to be angry with someone in your heart!  You don't have to actually kill them.  It's really very easy to break God's law, isn't it!  What about abortion?  Do you agree with this practice?  If so, then you are also guilty of murder before God.

God's law forbidding adultery ensures sexual purity; that a husband and his wife will be faithful to each other for life.  Homosexual and lesbian relationships are sinful.  Keeping sexually pure is a challenge.  Jesus explained that to break God's law; all that was necessary was for a man to lust after another woman.  He didn't even need to say hello to her!  We must keep out hearts pure.

God reveals what homosexuals think ...

Have you considered the last of God's ten commandments, the one about not being jealous over other people's goods?  This divine law has no practical outworking.  It is entirely a matter of one's heart attitude.  God sees right inside our hearts all the time.  There are no secrets with God.

... all have sinned; all have fall short of God's glorious standard.
Romans 3:23

... the wages of sin is death,
but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:23

Warning and help

God calls all people to stop sinning! We only need to break one of God's laws then we are faced with two serious problems.  The first is that we are cut off from our loving Creator by our sin and doomed to die.  The second is that we must face the anger of God against sin when we die.  If this worries you then you need to check out God's only solution for sin, His Son, Jesus Christ.  Contact Monash Christian Fellowship or another good local church for more information and help.  We are here to help you.  Jesus came to save sinners!
