Home LIFE HELPS 10 Seconds Fame

"I want more than ten seconds of fame!"

The problem is real

Train surfing, Graffiti, DrunkenessA "train surfer" thinks "Two seconds of fame is not enough, I need more." He is not alone; many people have real concerns that their life is irrelevant unless they are on show.  They sometimes try "train surfing", sometimes graffiti and put their tags on show to the public.  Many novel things are tried in the search for the importance of life.  Some give up the quest for importance and try to dull the pain of their existence by using alcohol and illicit drugs.

Solutions that don't work

Although many things get tried, the results are at the best temporary!  The train surfer, assuming he doesn't fall off or get electrocuted, may get a short thrill, but this does not last.  Almost immediately another buzz is required, then another, etc.  Painting graffiti has got to be a safer activity, but putting your tag on many walls only serves to tell other people that you are a loser.  It certainly does not get you recognised as important.  There is also the problem of law breaking which will sooner or later prove very costly.  As for alcohol and drugs, well, it may dull the pain of worthlessness for a short time, but it is no solution to the problem!  Neither can our human bodies endure such abuse.  Having tried all sorts of things, many people come to the conclusion that it's not possible to have a satisfying life, therefore life is not worth living!

When all else fails - check the manufacturer's instructions

BibleWhen problems arise with appliances and electronic devices, most people have the wisdom to check the manufacturer's instructions.  But many people do not know the same wisdom can and should be applied to our problems in life.  We have been created by a loving God, who has given us His instruction book, the Bible, to guide us through all life's problems. Solutions do exist!

So what does God say in the Bible, that's relevant to the problem of trying to find more than two seconds of fame and satisfaction in life?  There are two basic things:-

First, God tells us that He not only created us, but also He loves us.  That should encourage our hearts and motivate us to find out more.  We are not some accident of evolution with no purpose and no future.  All of us were created for a good purpose with hope for the future.  Now if we find that purpose and adjust to it, then our lives will be so full of real living and purpose that we won't want anything less.  We will have the satisfying and fulfilling lives that we so desperately desire.  We will be important people.

Jesus said
"My purpose is to give life in all its fullness."
John 10:10 New Living Translation

Second, God has created us to live in a loving family structure.  This is in addition to the direct support we get from God.  Ah, but many have no family that loves them.  Maybe their parents died, maybe their parents rejected them, maybe they had a terrible upbringing and now just don't fit anywhere.  What then?  Has God's design failed?

God puts the solitary in familiesIt's not a problem to God.  There is a wonderful verse in the Bible which says:-

God sets the lonely in families; ...
(from Psalm 68 verse 6 New Living Translation)

No problem is too hard for God to solve.  If you don't have a loving supportive family around you, then God will provide you with one.  They may not be your biological family, but they will love you and help you.  This is God's design for you, part of His total package of care for you, but you are thinking:-

Why am I not receiving God's love right now?

This is the right question to ask.  Why am I not receiving God's love?  The answer is that we are cut-off from God's love because we are not worthy to be received by God.  What makes us unworthy is:-

  • we do wrong things,
  • we say wrong things
  • and we even think wrong things.

The Bible calls this SIN.  God is perfect and holy and can have nothing to do with any wrong thought, word or action.  We are cut-off from God's love because we have all done wrong things, said wrong things and thought wrong things.  Any single wrong is sufficient to permanently cut a person off from the loving God.  Not only that, but at the end of our lives each of us will be judged by God!  Sin causes God to be angry with us!

This leaves us with big problems which no one can solve.  But in spite of this, God offers His love to us and has made a solution for our problem.  He sent His own Son, Jesus Christ into the world, to die on a cross for sin.  Jesus is the only One who could make this payment.

Now the good news is that Jesus did not stay dead, but rose to life again and now offers forgiveness and new life to all who will receive Him.

But as many as received Him (Jesus),
to them He gave the right to become children of God,
to those who believe in His name:
John 1:12 New King James Translation

To receive Jesus' offer of forgiveness and eternal life, a person needs to be prepared to give up their old way of living and invite Jesus to be the boss of their lives for the future.  You really need to be sick of sinning and want to change.  You need to submit to Jesus.  When this is done, God cancels all that person's sins and turns on all the benefits of His love.  This is truly wonderful.  It's the only way to live a fulfilling life.
