I was born this way - the Bible agrees

Blame shifting - passing the buck

Homosexuals and Pastors were born sinners I was born ... Blame shifting is oh so common today. It seems nobody is ever at fault for anything.  Faults are always in others or somewhere else.  Here's a few examples:-

  • I was born a homosexual.
It's not my fault I'm this way.
  • I was drunk.
It's not my fault I could not control the car and people were killed.
  • I was born a paedophile.
It's wrong that I should be in jail.
I  was  born  this way.gr_tk
The Bible agrees.

Therefore I behave this way. gr_tk
The Bible agrees.

Therefore I have no sin.gr_cs
Wrong! God holds each person accountable for their sinful choices.
Being born with a desire to sin does not excuse our moral responsibility to choose to do what is right.
  • I was born with the need for speed.
It's unfair that I have so many speeding fines.
  • My parents did not give me what I wanted.
That's why I am like I am today.
    It's not my fault!

We blame shift just like Adam and Eve.

Our first parents, Adam and Eve were created perfect.  God commanded them, Do not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If they disobeyed they would die!  They ate the forbidden fruit and the blame game started.  Here's where the human race begins telling LIES.

God said to Adam
Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?

It's not my fault
It's that woman You gave me
She made me do it
It's the fault of the woman, blame her.
And it's also Your fault
Because You gave her to me!

God asked the woman
What is this you have done?

It's not my fault
It's the snakes fault
He confused me
That's why I ate what was forbidden
It's all the snake's fault

These excuses were not acceptable to God and the death penalty was enacted.  Adam and Eve were expelled from the beautiful garden and sin entered the whole world and changed all things for the worse.  This is the world we live in today.  We not only live in this world but we are also born with an legacy from our first parents.

Born with a sinful heart (Inherited sin)

All are born with inherited sin from our parentsBecause our first parents, Adam and Eve rebelled against God, they became sinners.  They passed on their sinfulness ... the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
.                             Genesis 6:5
(or pollution or uncleanness) to the next generation and so on.  People today are born with this inherited sin, rather like a defective cancer causing gene.  This is also called original sin and total depravity.

Jesus Christ said that sin arises from our hearts ... from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
All these evil things come from within and defile a man.
.                             Mark 7:21-23
and Apostle Paul writes that all have turned awayThere is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God.
They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one."
.                             Romans 3:11,12
from God.

Children
brn_trainAll parents learn that children left to themselves with no instruction, do what is wrong. This is clear evidence of inherited sin.

Although evil desires cannot be removed, good parenting, good social connections and a good legal justice system help children grow to control their behaviors.  Without these Christian influences, children grow to become criminals.

Parents in every generation must continually train their childrenThe rod and rebuke give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.
.                             Proverbs 29:15
to do what is right. The greatest blessing a parent can give a child is to teach them about God and His love... from childhood you (Timothy) have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
.                             2 Timothy 3:15
offered to them in Jesus Christ.

We commit actual sins

brn_asinThe result of being born with inherited sin (a sinful heart) is that our hearts natural tendency is to be in rebellion to God.  Accordingly we have evil desires in our hearts.  Inclinations to kill, argue, rebel, blame-shift, steal, lie, be sexually immoral, etc.  As soon as we have moral consciousness we make our own decisions, and we follow some of these desires and start committing actual sins.

The soul who sins shall die. .... Ezekiel 18:24

We cannot help how we are born but God calls us to live morally.  He has given us His Law, the 10 commandments, to teach us how we should live. Any violation of God's law results in eternal punishment!

Born guilty of sin (Imputed guilt)

All are born with imputed guilt from Adam's sinImputed guilt is a difficult concept for Westerners to grasp, because our thinking tends to only consider individuals, not groups. Adam, because God created him first, became the head of the whole human race. When Adam sinned, he not only sinned for himself, but on behalf of the whole human race.  We all sinned, being in Adam! The guilt of that initial sin is passed directly from Adam to each person!  This imputed guilt is held against us by God even though we did nothing to directly cause it.

brn_oweImputed guilt is similar to imputed debt.  People living in debt-laden countries are painfully aware of imputed debt.  Previous governments in these countries, as head of the people, overspent and incurred huge debts.  Today's result is that many who were not directly responsible for the overspending are now imputed with the debt.  They are liable and will be repaying it for years.  This is like imputed guilt.  Adam committed one sin and we all pay the consequences!

Imputed Righteousness

Good News! The Bible tells us that by imputed righteousness, we can have our guilt cancelled Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity (guilt / punishment), ...
.                             Psalm 32:2
and be friends with God! God credits His people with imputed righteousness, making them holy in His sight, not because of any thing they have done... to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness,
.                             Romans 4:5
... Abraham "believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness."
So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.
.                             Galatians 3:6,9
, but simply because they have faith. Imputed righteousness comes by faith in Jesus Christ... a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, ...
.                             Galatians 2:16
.

Apostle Paul writes about our imputed guilt in the end of Romans chapter 5 ... through one man (Adam) sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned-
.                             Romans 5:12
... by the one man's offense many died, ...
.                             Romans 5:15
... For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, ...
.                             Romans 5:16
... by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, ...
.                             Romans 5:17
... through one man's offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, ...
.                             Romans 5:18
.

Surely imputed guilt cannot be all that bad? The Bible tells us that people who lived before Moses gave the 10 Commandments (and hence did not sin by breaking the commands) all died.  That's right, imputed guilt was sufficient to cause the death of all these generations!  Paul also writes to the Ephesians that they came into this world with God's wrath upon them ... (The Ephesians) were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
.                             Ephesians 2:3
.  And we need to remember that God is holy and just, there is no unrighteousness in Him.

Adam caused condemnation and death for the whole human race!

Born this way is no excuse

It is clear that no one gets off to a good start in life.  Truly may we all say  I was born a sinner! Yet God holds each one of us accountable for our sins!  We cannot blame anyone but ourselves PLUS we must not commit sins.  Apostle Paul describes the difficulty of our problems when he writes from personal experience that he cannot stop sinning For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.
For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.
.                             Romans 7:18,19
by his own efforts. Fortunately Paul also documents the fact that Jesus Christ is the solution ... Who will deliver me from this body of death?
I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord! ...
.                             Romans 7:24,25
.

The solution to being born a sinner is to be born again

Dear reader, you have an important decision to make today. Will you continue your life as you were born and accept all the consequences?  Or do you desire to turn from your old life, turn to Jesus Christ and receive new life?  God offers you His love through Jesus Christ.  You can become a Christian today.

Jesus Christ freely gives forgiveness, righteousness and a new heart The Bible describes all true Christians as being born again, born of God's Holy Spirit.  When someone turns from their sin, follows Jesus Christ and trusts fully in Him, they are born again. They receive:-

  • Forgiveness for sins - cancelling the punishments for actual sins committed.

Bible facts

Be born again... if anyone is in Christ,
he is a new creation;
old things have passed away;
behold, all things have become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17
  • All people are born sinners.  We all enter the world guilty for Adam's sin, and we all enter the world with hearts in rebellion to God.  We choose to reject God's way of living and commit sins.
  • God holds each person accountable for their sins.  Being born sinners does not excuse our sinful thoughts, words or actions.   All sin is displeasing to God and raises His anger against us.  There will be a Judgement Day!
  • God's solution is Jesus Christ.  Jesus died on a cross for sin and rose from the dead.  People who turn from their sin and personally receive Jesus as their Lord and Saviour receive forgiveness for sins, a new heart with Godly desires, imputed righteousness and the power to live Godly lives.  The Bible calls this being born again.  And there's still heaven to come.
